Bicycle License Plates Available from DMV

I pride myself on how much more valuable my bicycles are than my 15 year old Subaru. Accesorising generally doesn't fit with that, but these new license plates are a must have for every cyclist. They only cost $10 more when you renew your registration and have a great message--"Share The Road". The fees go to the Bicycle Transportation Alliance and Cycle Oregon.

My registration isn't isn't up for a year, so I went to the Oregon DMV website to get a replacement set. Unfortunately they lived up to the DMV stereotype as being a customer unfriendly bureaucracy. You have to print out a long, long form and provide a ton of info. Insurance, vehicle id, registration numbers, car and drivers license numbers, plate numbers. I didn't want to hunt around for all that. I'm already registered, why can't they just cross reference all this from their databases? You have to write a check-who does that anymore?- and mail in, you can't do it online. Selecting the "Share The Road" plate is not even explicit on the form and its totally unclear as to the amount of fees they want. I put it on the shelf. It would be easier to climb 3 Creeks Road 3 times! Hopefully it'll be easier to get the plates when my registration comes due in about a year--or maybe I'll decide to spend half a day in getting the replacement thing figured out!

It's true that it's a bit of a maze to try and get the new Share the Road plates, but it's still worth doing. If you get your renewal in the mail, you can pencil in your request, since it's not automatically printed as an option yet. It should be only $20 on top of your regular renewal to get the new plates. or $25 if you are between renewals I think. You can call ODOT 503/945-5000 to verify how much you need to pay and figure out what forms you need. You can do it online and do it by mail and avoid the lines. Identifying yourself as a cyclist and reminding other drivers about sharing the road is a good thing. There is strength in numbers.
